I have a policy of saying yes to anything that Wes Pence asks me to do. He invited me over for a rock session last winter and told me he thought I’d enjoy the guys he was playing with. Turned out to be Billy Catfish and Pete Nienaber. I had met Billy and handful of times at the Old Southgate House and had heard plenty of stories about him from my cousin, Geoff. I also knew Pete from the neighborhood. We spent nearly all of last year in Wes’ basement going through takes of about 10 or 12 songs. Eventually Chase Johnston joined us. There were a few weeks that we played every night. There’s dozens and dozens of recordings of each song. Sometimes I’d be playing bass, sometimes guitar, sometimes the 12-string Ric.

Somewhere along the line we all wound up with nicknames. I’m Popcorn. Wes is Old Master and/or the Colonel. Pete is T-Sprinkle. Chase is the Ace. Billy is the Kentucky Gremlin. We also have a side project called Jazz Hounds in which I play drums, Pete plays keys and Billy does the Gremlin thing.

Here’s a handful of my favorite takes selected from the Billy Catfish archive. Lovingly titled the collection "Old Sport" as that's what we all wanted to call the band but Billy was having none of it. Looking forward to rocking with these guys tonight.
